Pens 2 – Islanders 1/SO – Dec. 11

Much like their first meeting in New York this year, the Pens went to OT against the Islanders last night. But, unlike that first tilt, the Penguins came up winners. Phil Kessel scored in the first frame of the shootout, which was the first time any Penguin has scored in the shootout this year. They’ve only played two games to a shootout thus far, but its surprising given the Pens all-star firepower. New York tied it up, and it seemed as though the Pens best chance to win was when Kris LeTang got around goalie Robin Lehner and had an empty cage to shoot into, but missed. Jake Guentzel, though, sealed the deal when he scored in the very next frame. Casey DeSmith came up large in both the game and the shootout, stopping four of the five Islanders shooters. Last night was the final game of the regular season between the two teams and the win resulted in a season split. The Pens got the extra point and are now tied with the Islanders for third in the Metropolitan Division. Pittsburgh moves on to Chicago to wrap up their road trip, Wednesday night.
