Alice Cooper’s “O”

Here’s a fun fact: Did you know that rock legend Alice Cooper is responsible for the second out of three “O’s” in the Hollywood sign? In 1978, the Hollywood sign, originally an advertisement for the “Hollywoodland” housing development in Los Angeles, was severely dilapidated. Playboy’s editor and owner Hugh Hefner helped spearhead a campaign to rebuild the landmark, and solicited donations from several celebrities for individual letters. Among the investors were Hefner himself, singer Andy Williams, actor Gene Autry, and, the Godfather of Shock Rock himself, Alice Cooper. Cooper contributed money for the second “O” in the sign in memory of fable comedian Groucho Marx.
